This is an upper-level course that will cover such topics as basic concepts of sustainability, energy
auditing, green and sustainable materials, and life-cycle frameworks for sustainability.

The course also focuses on the application of the concept of sustainability to the management of energy, water, and waste.
Students will demonstrate key knowledge in sustainability by conducting a life-cycle assessment (LCA)
project.

Content and Methodology

Course components:


Pedagogical approach:



  • Online lectures (More than 6 weeks)

  • Problem-based learning, essays, video examples, assignments, flipped classroom learning method and intercultural learning


Assignments:


In total the students hand in two assignments for evaluation during the course. The assignments should be submitted
individually. In addition, there will be homework assignments and quizzes following the tutorials to assess
student's progress.


Learning outcomes:


By the end of the course the student will be expected to be able to:
1) Identify the common construction material used in concrete structures
2) Critically evaluate mechanics underlying the design code
3) Perform structural design by using mathematics, mechanics and structural analysis tools
4) Design structural elements following design codes and engineering practices independently
5) Solve practical design problems with uncertainties.
