EXTENDED REALITY

An introduction to Virtual and Augmented Reality
EXTENDED REALITY
Reference Code EUG2_T2_1_0121
Host Institution UPSaclay - Université Paris-Saclay
Description

This blended course introduces foundational concepts and technologies in Virtual and Augmented Reality, enabling students to design and program basic VR/AR applications. It includes online lectures, training, and two international team-based projects. A final on-site workshop will involve selected students based on academic merit. Assessment is through exams and project evaluations, and the course grants 5 ECTS credits.

The subject is built on:

-             online lectures by both Marius Wang and Filippo Fabbri (20 hours overall) covering the basic VR/AR design and programming techniques in UNITY/C# environment

-             -       two projects:  a smaller project and a larger project. The projects involve going through the phases from idea to finished product. The task can be solved in groups, and the project must be managed and documented according to the philosophy TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT.

Content and Methodology

Digital Skills

The candidate will gain knowledge on virtual reality (VR) technologies:  hardware (headset, devices, etc.) and software (application engines such as UNITY, VR client, C# script programming, etc.). Also, introduction to 3D modeling and developing will be covered. Project management digital tools will be also used.

Communication & Collaboration; Leadership & Social Impact; Ethics & Responsibility; Creativity & Problem Solving; Knowledge into action; Emotional Awareness & Resilience; Critical Thinking; Intercultural Skills

The candidate will learn to carry out a project from idea to finished product. This means that the candidate should be able to generate an idea through a creative process, to implement product development methods, to describe the idea with necessary media such as 3D-CAD, mathematical models, simulations, descriptive text and the like. The candidate should be able to assess and indicate the necessary tolerances and sources of error for the product development, where the environment and sustainability are also taken into account.

The candidate should be able to use his/her knowledge and skills to be able to communicate with all involved parties in a project within international framework.  The candidate will gain the competence to work in a creative and independent way to realize an idea through a project, to manage his/her work within an international team, and to assess and present the project results in a critical way
