AMfH - Additive Manufacturing and its Relevance in Healthcare
Reference Code EUG2_T2_1_0157
Host Institution USZ - University of Szeged
Description

Additive manufacturing (AM) is evolving into a mature technology and becoming a key enabler for the most recent breakthroughs in medicine. AMfH is a blended course that offers a comprehensive deep dive into the transformative world of 3D printing, specifically tailored for its rapidly evolving role in the medical sector. We invite motivated students to gain expert knowledge in this fast-growing field that has already demonstrated world-first achievements in various fields of medicine.

Our journey begins with six weeks of dynamic online lectures and webinars, during which we will demystify the mechanics of layer-by-layer construction by mainly focusing on thermoplastic filament-, resin- and powder-based AM technologies. The curriculum covers a diverse range of printable materials — from biocompatible plastics to advanced alloys — and the specific design strategies required to use them effectively. We will bridge the gap between radiology and engineering by mastering 3D medical imaging and processing DICOM data. From patient-specific implants (PSIs) to the revolutionary field of bioprinting and artificial tissues, you will also explore the applications, ethics, and regulations shaping modern healthcare.

The experience culminates in an intensive onsite week is Szeged where we transform conceptual knowledge into practical skills. Working with professional hardware and software, you will isolate anatomical structures from CT/MRI scans and prepare them for AM production. You will get hands-on experience with the entire workflow: part orientation, support generation, slicing, and post-production. This week is arranged around a collaborative project work, in which you will solve real-world healthcare related challenges in small, international teams.

Join us and contribute to the success of AMfH and become the specialist who turns digital data into life-saving medical solutions.
