Physics meets Medicine – Interdisciplinary Innovations with Large-Scale Facilities brings together emerging scientists from across Europe to explore the dynamic interface between physical sciences and medical technologies. Co-hosted by the University of Hamburg and EUGLOH’s associated partner, the Medical University of Vienna, this three-day on-site workshop fosters interdisciplinary dialogue among students and early-career researchers working in nanoscience, physics, biology, and medical sciences.

Building on the success of the first edition, “Entrepreneurship meets Health Innovation at Large-Scale Facilities”, this follow-up workshop shifts the focus towards the translational dimension of research, emphasising how large-scale infrastructures can drive innovation in medical and life sciences.

Participants will gain direct insight into the scientific work conducted at major infrastructures such as CFEL (Center for Free-Electron Laser Science) and CHyN (Center for Hybrid Nanostructures) in Hamburg. The programme includes expert lectures from leading scientists at UHH, UKE, CHyN, CFEL and the Medical University of Vienna, complemented by interactive formats dedicated to technology transfer, scientific entrepreneurship and interdisciplinary collaboration.

A complementary half-day, parallel workshop format will offer participants two thematic pathways: “From Research to Market”, focused on innovation and commercialisation in science, and “From Research to Impact”, delivered in collaboration with the University of Hamburg Career Center. While the first pathway provides hands-on exposure to intellectual property, entrepreneurship, and innovation management, the second broadens the perspective towards research impact beyond the market, including career development in academia, policy, public engagement, and the non-profit sector. Participants will work in two groups that rotate between the sessions after a coffee break, ensuring that all attendees benefit from both perspectives on how scientific research can create value for society and contribute to sustainable change.

Through close engagement with strategic partners from the EUGLOH alliance and associated institutions, the activity aims to stimulate sustainable collaborations, inspire innovative research questions and strengthen Europe’s capacity in interdisciplinary research at the physics–medicine interface.

Content and Methodology

METHODOLOGY

The workshop adopts a participatory and practice-oriented teaching approach that blends scientific excellence with innovation training:

  • Scientific lectures: Experts from partner institutions present state-of-the-art methodologies and applications bridging physics and medicine.

  • Interactive “World Café”: Rotating small-group discussions encourage networking, knowledge exchange and collaborative problem-solving.

  • Technology transfer session: Participants explore how research ideas can be translated into practical and clinical applications, including an overview of available institutional support.

  • “From Research to Market” workshop: Practical exercises on idea validation, value creation and commercialisation strategies, facilitated by experts from academia and industry.

  • Networking opportunities: Informal exchanges, including a joint dinner, support relationship-building within the EUGLOH community.

The design enables participants to actively contribute their expertise, broaden their scientific perspective, and develop collaborative projects across disciplines and national borders.

KEY COMPETENCES

This activity further supports the development of core EUGLOH competences:

  • Knowledge into Action: Translating fundamental research into potential clinical and technological applications

  • Creativity: Fostering innovative thinking through interdisciplinary exposure and collaborative formats

  • Critical Thinking: Developing the ability to assess and integrate different scientific approaches

  • Societal Impact: Understanding how physics and medicine converge to address global health challenges

  • Intercultural Skills: Strengthening international collaboration and communication through a diverse, multicultural learning environment
