MUN stands for Model United Nations, an educational simulation in which participants represent countries, organizations, or stakeholders and debate international issues using procedures inspired by the United Nations.

Hanseatic Model United Nations (HAMMUN) is an international MUN conference held in Hamburg, Germany, that brings together students to simulate diplomatic negotiations and decision-making processes in international organizations. The 2026 conference focuses on the theme “Currents of Cooperation: Securing the Future at Sea,” exploring maritime security, international trade, environmental sustainability, and ocean governance. Participants engage in debates and policy drafting across committees tailored to different experience levels, including the Conference of the Parties (COP), European Council (EuCo), North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), World Trade Organization (WTO), United Nations Security Council (UNSC), and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS). Through these simulations, delegates develop skills in diplomacy, public speaking, negotiation, and international policy analysis.

Participants will be selected depending on their motivation, which they can indicate through submitting motivation letters. It is advantageous if applicants indicate which committee they would like to join.

Previous MUN experience are advantageous, but not a requirement just as early registrations are favored, but don’t necessarily guarantee participation.

The motivation letter should answer the following questions within 1 - 1,5 pages:

This MUN conference will introduce participants to the principles of diplomacy, international relations, and multilateral decision-making through a realistic simulation of the United Nations.

Through committee sessions, debates, negotiations, and resolution drafting, participants will develop practical skills in public speaking, research, critical thinking, negotiation, and consensus-building while addressing contemporary global challenges.

The conference is designed for students from diverse academic backgrounds who are interested in international affairs, policymaking, and developing their leadership and communication abilities in a collaborative and multicultural environment.

By the end of the conference, participants will have gained experience in analyzing international issues from different perspectives, representing the interests of an assigned country or stakeholder, engaging effectively in formal debate and negotiation processing, and contributing to the development of policy solutions through teamwork and diplomatic dialogue. Participants will receive a Certificate of Participation in recognition of their active involvement in the conference.
